LISHE – nutritional food for the little ones

06/12/2025

We all know that a balanced and variety-rich diet is one of the basic conditions for healthy development and growth of children. However, not all mothers can afford to treat their children to such a luxury that would provide them with the necessary nutrients. Many children grow up eating only UGALI corn porridge. And although the locals believe that this dish provides energy and strength even to the hardest-working men, and this is probably true, children simply need much more. A specially blended mixture called LISHE is available on the local market for making porridge, or rather a very thick drink that provides children with a range of essential nutrients. It consists mainly of legumes and cereals, but also other nourishing ingredients. However, it is another item in the budget that most families cannot afford. We therefore decided to regularly supply the youngest children from the poorest families with this mixture and thus do at least something small for their healthy development and growth. We carefully studied the composition of all available ingredients that are commonly grown and consumed here and created a recipe filled with everything necessary. We select and purchase the individual ingredients ourselves in the best possible quality and prepare the mixture. We are 100% sure of what is in the porridge and how it was made. After buying the individual ingredients, we carefully sort through them like Cinderella and remove anything that doesn't belong there. Then we wash them, dry them in the sun, mix everything together, and grind it. All that's left is to put the mixture in bags and deliver it to those who are in need.

Our SUPER PORRIDGE contains:

Corn, millet, mungo beans, pumpkin seeds, cassava, peanuts, sesame seeds, red beans, and hibiscus.

For healthy growth and development, children need sufficient protein, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as a range of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C supports the immune system and also influences the production of collagen, which is essential for healthy bones, teeth, and gums. B vitamins are important for proper nervous system function and mental well-being, vitamin A for healthy eyes, and vitamin K for strong bones. Luckily, children in Africa get enough vitamin D :). The most important minerals for children include calcium for healthy bones and teeth, zinc, which supports proper growth, iron, which is important for the formation of red blood cells and the distribution of oxygen in the body, and magnesium for healthy bones, muscles, and the nervous system. We have set ourselves the goal to pump the porridge with of all these nutrients.

MAIZE contains not only the ever-present carbohydrates, but also vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, iron, and lutein, which is important for vision.

MILLET provides children with essential proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins.

MUNGO BEANS are nutritionally capable of replacing a piece of meat and also contain a lot of fiber and carbohydrates. They also provide potassium, magnesium, iron, folic acid, and other B vitamins.

PUMPKIN SEEDS are literally supercharged with everything you need. They contain lots of zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamins A, E, B complex, vitamin K, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. They pump the body full of everything it needs.

CASSAVA is widely grown and consumed on the African continent. It supplies the body mainly with carbohydrates, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin K, which is important for healthy bones and teeth, and also contains lots of vitamin C.

PEANUTS are considered nuts, but in fact they are a very healthy legume. They are loaded with valuable vitamins and minerals and supply the body mainly with fats and proteins. Peanuts can replace meat and eggs in their composition. They contain vitamin E, B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper, and iron.

SESAME SEEDS, along with pumpkin seeds and hibiscus, are the most expensive items in the recipe, but they are definitely worth investing in. They provide children with healthy fats and calcium. They are also a source of magnesium, iron, zinc, and B vitamins.

RED BEANS provide the body with essential protein, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, folic acid, and magnesium, and support a healthy immune system.

HIBISCUS was added to the mixture mainly for its vitamin C, provitamin A, and calcium content. It also slightly colors and flavors the mixture :).
