The house is almost ready :)
As we mentioned in a previous article, even the rainy season did not stop us from starting our plan to build a new home for Mariamu and her children to help them find a dignified place to live. The shelter they were living in was already really unstable. When it rained, it was full of water, so they had to take temporary refuge in someone else's. And even though not all the work was finished on the day I left, the house is already standing and we hope the whole family will move into the new one as soon as possible :). And it was quite a challenge. Obstacles are literally an everyday part of life here. It needs calm mind but in the end everything always gets sorted out somehow. Huge thanks belongs again to Charlie, who helped me manage the whole project. Currently, the windows still need to be glazed and the floors finished. When I will come back, Amrani and I will give the windows and doors a final coat of paint. If it will be possible, we will build a toilet next to the house. And we will get the carpenter to make a big bed and buy a mattress so that everyone can finally get a good, comfortable night's sleep. Everyone deserves that :). And because we spent a little more time with the family this time, we also managed to get closer to the twins Boniface and Witness, who previously only watched us suspiciously and ran home to hide from us :D. Boniface took his time, but in the end we gained their trust and saw them laugh genuinely. The children here don't have any toys except what they make from what they find, so one day I brought the twins two small foam balls. They played with them enthusiastically for a while, running back and forth, but the balls didn't last very long. Boniface declared it was a mango and chewed it all up :D. The children were always most happy when we brought something to eat. The family's daily diet consists only of Ugali corn porridge with a little bit of steamed green leaves. Nothing else is usually eaten at home. This was the first time Boni and Witi had tasted boiled eggs, sweet potatoes and also various fruits. I had some photos printed and laminated for the family in town. I also printed them an old house as a souvenir so they wouldn't forget where they used to live. The children saw their faces for the first time, they were all really happy with the photos and laughed a lot. Mariamu is extremely grateful to all of you who played a part in making this big dream come true and providing a home for her and her children. And we also thank you very much. We hope that they will finally be dry, safe and SATISFIED in their new home!
